Dear Parents

I want to begin by thanking you for your support with our events last term. I am well aware that leading up to Christmas there were several financial demands made which is difficult when everyone is trying to be prudent. I trust you were pleased with the photographs, Mr Little usually has excellent results.

For example:-

  • The Christmas Tree
  • New Christmas decorations
  • Subsidy for boxes for sporting
  • events
  • Christmas extras for classes
  • Seeds/bulbs for the school garden
  • Class cookery expenses
  • Star time treats/prizes/sports trophies
Prudent budgeting ensures our funds are used for maximum benefit and the school fund enables us to supplement the school budget if necessary. I hope this makes the financial situation a little clearer for you. I am grateful to the community
and you as parents/carers for your ongoing support.

Breakfast Club

The Breakfast Club starts on Monday 11th January. It will be held in the school hall from 8.15-8.50 daily. No children will be permitted in the hall prior to 8.15. The club will be staffed by Mrs Christine Patterson and Miss Caroline Ather who will organise a range of activities in the hall and of course serve breakfast. A range of cereals, toast, fruit etc will be on sale
ranging from 20-30p. Details of prices will be available on the noticeboard at the front of the school. There is no charge for attending the club. On the first morning each child will receive a free piece of fruit. I have asked our new Director, Rachael Seitz, to attend the opening ceremony. A good turn out is hoped for. If you have any questions about this please contact me via the school office.

Make Ten

For the first part of this term our Make Ten will focus on personal appearance (uniform etc) and presentation
of work
. Points will be awarded each week for a particular aspect of this. Your help in ensuring children are smartly turned out and wear correct uniform is appreciated. On the whole Andover pupils dress appropriately but shorts (girls) and micro mini skirts are not suitable for school wear. Once again, please ensure all clothing is named.

Head Lice

There was a spate of head lice at the end of term.  The only way for us to combat this nuisance is to comb heads regularly and use lotion available from the chemist (free if you complete “Direct Care” form at chemist). Pupils with long hair are advised to tie it back. If you find your child/children have an infestation please inform Mrs Lindsay and treat before the child returns to school.

Class Contexts for the next six weeks approx.

  • Nursery - Winter
  • Launch Pad - Friends for Life
  • P1 - Sun, Moon and Stars
  • P2 - Weather
  • P2/3 -
  • P3 - Book Study-Happy Mouse Tales
  • P4 - Castles
  • P5B - Author Study
  • P5M - Author Study
  • P6 - Scotland’s Past
  • P6/7 - Discovery and Explorers
  • P7 - World War 2
We tried to involve adults who have a particular expertise in helping deliver information & share interests with the children. If you are knowledgeable about one of our contexts and could help inspire our learners please contact me, again via Mrs
Lindsay.

Fair Trade

Our Fair Trade Tuckshop is held every Friday. Healthy Fair Trade goods are sold with a view to promoting awareness of Fair Trade rather than making a profit. Prices range from 15p to 40p. This is run by the Pupil Council.

School Clubs

There are NO clubs this week. All the clubs held last term will resume again next week. In addition there will be:
Dancing - Tuesdays3.20 - 4.20 P5-7
(notes to be issued.)
Cooking Club - New Group - Thursdays
(notes to be issued.)

It is imperative that, once children have signed up to attend, should they be unable to attend for some reason, that the club leader is notified.

Forthcoming Events

Cluster Literacy week

A joint literacy venture involving creative writing, author visits, storytelling etc. to promote good reading/writing habits is planned for the first week in March. Watch this space.

Toothbrushing Initiative

At Andover all children in the Nursery-p3 take part in toothbrushing each day . Next week there is to be a focus on oral hygiene and each child in these classes will be issued with a toothbrush, toothpaste and record card to encourage
toothbrushing at home . Please help your child complete the log and return to school on Monday 18th January.

Parent Council Meeting

The next Parent Council meeting will be held on Monday 11th January at 6.30.

High School Visit

On Monday 18th January, P7 pupils will begin a series of visits to Brechin High School.

Mid-term Break

The mid-term break will take place from Thursday 11th February until Monday 15th February inclusive.

Burns Supper

On Friday 5th February, some pupils will participate in a Burns Supper at Gardner Memorial Church.

Valentine’s Disco

The Valentine’s disco this year will take place on Wednesday 10th February.

Outdoor Clothing

Today the children have all had a lot of fun playing in the snow. Please note at school NO snowballing is allowed. As this icy spell looks like continuing for a while please ensure your child/children is/are dressed warmly for coming to school . Unless it is really wet breaktimes will be outside and we only have a limited amount of spare clothing in school . A warm jacket/coat,
gloves and wellingtons or boots are really essential in this weather . The staff –and children would appreciate your co-operation in this matter.

Best wishes for 2010
Your sincerely

Dear Parents and Friends

Following on from the dramatic start to our term, with the staff room fire, school routines have been set up and the term is well underway.  A big thank you to you all for dressing the children so smartly in Andover sweatshirts, new shoes and jackets etc.  Our first spot check on named uniforms revealed very few jumpers without names which is most encouraging.  Please check name tags again once clothing has been in the wash!

Pupil Council

Two representatives have been chosen democratically for each class and the second meeting will take place this week.  The agenda will include—school discos, Christmas good turns, Health Week and a slot for pupil suggestions.  Council  Representatives are:-

  • P1 Max McCulloch & Sarah Baker
  • P2 Lauren Watt & Roan Harrison
  • P2/3 Zara Torrie & Devon Durward
  • P3 Stuart Cameron & Zofia Golicka
  • P4 Chloe Allison & Cameron Ritchie
  • P5M Eden Kennedy & Isaac Chaffer
  • P5B Kerris Black & Glen Ford
  • P6 Natasha Laing & Logan Henderson
  • P6/7 David Platt & Shannon Young
  • P7 Kennedy Pyper & Ross Alexander

Peer Supporters

At Andover we encourage our children to be resilient and deal with any challenges they encounter in an age appropriate fashion.  This does sometimes mean asking a friend or an older pupil for help.  Mrs Barrow has once again trained a large group of P5 and P6 pupils as Peer Supporters.  These children will take turns in the playground to help and support their peers and they have been trained to be good listeners, observe body language and seek advice from an adult if necessary.  We hope all the children will make use of these supporters who can be recognised by their fluorescent yellow vests.

Morrison’s Tokens

We are now collecting tokens/vouchers from Morrison's which can be exchanged for seeds and gardening equipment for our garden.  Any tokens will be gratefully received at the School Office.

Learning Contexts

In line with a Curriculum for Excellence each class will be using a context for the next few weeks, through which the skills for several curricular areas will be taught, (mainly Maths, Science, Language).  The children will have already discussed with their teacher which areas they wish to find out about and although these topics are child centred, the teacher will of course direct the children.

The context for each class is listed below and as you can see many are closely linked to our School Health Week.  Any artefacts or books connected to each context would be appreciated and if you can spend some time talking with your child about their learning. This will have a positive impact.
Contexts are:-

  • Nursery Health → Harvest
  • P1 Teddy Bears Picnic
  • P2 Healthy lifestyles
  • P2/3 Healthy lifestyles
  • P3 Emotions & feelings
  • P4 Being active
  • P5B Being active
  • P5M Being active
  • P6 The human body
  • P6/7 Exercise & the body
  • P7 Healthy bodies, healthy minds
  • Launch Pad Castles

Spelling

In Primary 1, 2 and 3 we will be continuing to use ‘Jolly Phonics’ to teach letter sounds and initial spelling patterns.  This year we are reviewing our spelling policy as the standard of pupil’s spelling is not particularly high and there does not appear to be a link between the marks in ‘tests’ and everyday writing.  We will continue to look for correct spelling but at present will not be giving lists of words for homework.  Pupils will receive other subjects instead of spelling.

Homework

Throughout the School homework is given on a regular basis.  Our homework policy was reviewed last year and should you wish further clarification please ask to speak with a member of the Management  Team.

Homework diaries have been revamped this year to include showing the Make Ten total each week and spaces for a summary of the work covered each week, to be written by the child.

Your comments at the end of each week would be appreciated and all very helpful to us.  PLEASE sign the diary each evening once you are sure that your child has completed their work.  Your signature shows us you have seen the work.  You may wish to give advice if your son/daughter has a problem or has made a mistake.

P.E.

Mrs Sheila Brown is our specialist PE teacher who will be in school most Mondays.  Mr G Reid will take P1-P3 for PE on a Friday.  It is essential that all children have PE kit and that it is kept in school.  Crop tops and skimpy shorts are not acceptable.  Again, all equipment should be named.

Jewellery should not be worn on PE days as we cannot guarantee to store it safely once removed.

School Links

I am delighted that we have several volunteers helping out in Andover again.  Mr P.Neve is working during Golden Time on a photography project and has managed to procure disposable cameras from Semi-Chem free of charge.  Many thanks to Semi-Chem for their donation and to Van Werninck Studio in Montrose for a supply of card frames and backing paper.

Please, please if you have any spare time and could help out with craft work, wall displays or general support please let Mrs Lindsay at the Office know (assistance is particularly required for Golden Time on a Friday afternoon).

Congratulations

Martha Grieve has designed the ‘Andover School’ picture for our new Green Cards.  Well done Martha.  Green cards are awarded to pupils by any adult in school for good manners, being helpful, working hard, improvement and excellence in any area of school life.  These are given out at assemblies each week.

The P3 sports for cluster schools were held at Andover two weeks ago.  Well done to Jamie Baxter, Magdalena Tracz and Malone Edwards for achieving the most points.

Andover Make Ten System

The aim is to achieve ten points by Friday.  All pupils start a week with 5 points.  Each Friday a social skill is explained to all the children.  This could be ‘being cheerful’, ‘lining up quickly’, ‘putting litter in the bin’ etc.  Ways of carrying these tasks out are explained.  Children who comply with the rule  along with other positive demonstrations of good behaviour/attitude receive a point.  Points may be removed for failing to bring in homework, continual misdemeanours or bad behaviour.
This session the total points for a week will be made available in the homework diaries. For each block (about 6 weeks) the four pupils in each class with the highest score will receive a treat. (previous treats have included an outing to the park, bouncy castle, cooking and a mini cinema afternoon).

On the whole this system works well and the majority of children strive to achieve points.  Our Golden Time system is linked into ‘Make Ten’.  5 points = 30 minutes of Golden Time.

House Captains

  • Strathmore Andrew Johnston/Laura Ewen
  • Panmure Liam Swanson/Caitlyn Tough
  • Dalhousie Cameron Clark/Sophie Goodwin
  • Southesk Ben Harper/Nadia Anderson

Several House Events are planned for this term.  Watch this space!

HANDS UP SURVEY

Between 7th and 11th September 2009 all of Scotland’s school pupils will have the opportunity to take part in the national Hands Up Scotland Survey—the largest and most comprehensive survey of travel-to-school behaviour in the UK.  Pupils will be asked to indicate their mode of travel and this will provide up-to-date information for the Scottish Government

Open Door Policy

I wish to remind you that at Andover you are welcome to contact staff at any time to discuss your child, however the school is a very busy place and it would be very helpful if contact was kept until after 3.20pm.  Please leave a message with Mrs Lindsay if you wish to see a class teacher.  If you have any concerns re alleged bullying, behaviour or other serious issues, in the first instance please contact the following member of management:
  • Nursery Mrs Kennedy, DHT
  • P1-3 Miss Fitchett, PT (Infant Area)
  • P4+5 Mrs Kennedy, DHT (Middle Area)
  • P6+7 Mr Tough, PT (Upper Area)

Head Teacher’s Surgery

I will be available each Monday afternoon from 2.20—3.20pm or later and am happy to meet with you to discuss any matters relating to school.  Please make an appointment via Mrs Lindsay.

School Holiday Dates

Holiday dates are available on the calendar.

Parent Council AGM

The AGM of the Parent Council will be held on Wednesday 16th September, in school at 6.30pm.  Please come along and support the work of this group.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Yours sincerely

Dear Parents

Andover Fire

I am sure that some of you will have heard already about the unfortunate fire in the school staffroom.  Due to an electrical fault the whole of the staffroom has been destroyed and there is a lot of damage to the main foyer.  This happened, it is believed, on Saturday but was not discovered until yesterday morning.  This was not a good start to the new term.

Mr Sherrit, the cleaning staff and the Clerk of Works worked hard all day yesterday but it is likely the affected areas will be out of action until October.  It is very fortunate that the fire was contained and the school has been able to open as normal today.  There will be no access to the building through the main door until further notice.  It may be possible to speak to clerical staff at the office sliding window but notices will be posted at the front door with guidance.

New Pupils and New Staff

Several new families have been enrolled at Andover over the holidays and I look forward to getting to know these children.
This term we welcome new members of staff as follows:
  • Nursery - Mrs Claire Thompson
  • P3 - Miss Natasha Travis
  • P7 - Miss Caroline Duncan
  • Primary Assistant - Mrs Shari Hill
  • Primary Assistant - Miss Caroline Ather (Maternity Cover)
I am sure all these members of the team will soon feel at home and contribute to the good practice at Andover.
Mrs Monika Szymaszek gave birth to a baby girl, Gabriella just before the holidays.  Both Mum and baby are doing well and I am sure will be in to visit us before long.

Sadly, Mrs West is still on sick leave.  Mrs Lindsay will continue to act as Senior Clerical every morning assisted by Mrs Morrow and Mrs Dunbar.  I am very grateful to our office staff pulling together and working so hard to ensure the ongoing efficiency in the office.

School Health Week

The week beginning 24th August will be a Health Week and many activities and visitors have been organised to promote the various aspects of a healthy lifestyle.  Details will be sent home in due course.  On Wednesday 26th August Fiona Bird from Stirrin’ Stuff will lead cookery sessions and I would very much appreciate some adult volunteers to help clear away / prepare items etc.  If you can help out please contact Mrs Lindsay in the school office.

Help is also required with our after-school clubs which will be starting again soon.  If you can help out or wish to organise an activity please let me know.  You will be notified about enrolments for after school activities.

Uniform

As usual you have all endeavoured to send the children back to school with complete Andover uniform.  They are looking terrific and a credit to the school.  Please, please name sweatshirts and coats.  I am dismayed by the amount of property that was left in school unclaimed.  There will be a spot check on Thursday and on a regular basis thereafter.  Your co-operation in this matter is appreciated.

Scottish Executive visit to Andover

On Tuesday 25th, Keith Brown from the Scottish Executive will visit Andover to find out about our Partnership with Parents and view the work of the school.  They will be joined by our Assistant Director, Mrs Susan Duff and the Vice Convenor of the Education Committee.  We intend to flag up our good practice in working with you and of course the work of the Parent Council.  New Pupil Council members will be involved in giving our visitors a guided tour.  I am delighted Andover has been selected for a visit and we will take great pride in showcasing how things are done here.

School Lunches

School lunches now cost £1.70.  It would be very helpful if dinner money could be exact if possible as this speeds up the system in the morning.  All children having school lunches should check in prior to 8.55am.

Best wishes for the new term.

Yours sincerely
E.A. Howson
