Happy New Year

Andover Fundraiser for The Scottish Spina Bifida Association (SSBA)

The Scottish Spina Bifida Association (SSBA) is the only charity in Scotland to provide dedicated support services to everyone who has been affected by spina bifida and hydrocephalus since 1965. Their remit includes the provision of advice on welfare issues, medical conditions, education, housing, emotional development, medical issues and leisure activities.

Andover pupils attending the Christmas disco raised funds through the sale of tickets and second- hand toys. The collection from the Christmas Service was also donated to the SSBA.

Spina Bifida occurs during pregnancy. Most of those born with the condition will be paralysed and will have to use a wheelchair. There is no cure and nobody knows why spina bifida occurs; it can happen to anyone regardless of age, ethnicity or social background.

This Christmas, one of our own pupils, Franek Golicka (P1), received a bespoke trike from the SSBA.

 Clubs commence again at Andover

Staff at Andover Primary pride themselves on the wide range of after-school clubs that are on offer for pupils. HMIe noted the achievements of children at these sporting and social activities.

This term the usual clubs will commence on Monday 16th January unless notes home indicate otherwise. Clubs this term include Drumming (Wednesday/Thursday), Cooking (Tuesday), Dance (Monday/Thursday), Art (Tuesday), Football for girls (Fridays, commencing later this term) and boys (Wednesday) and Cheerleading (Wednesday).

New clubs this term include Gymnastics (Wednesday) and weekly Rugby (Thursday/Friday lunchtimes)

The help from pupils at Brechin High School continues to be appreciated.

Any adult wishing to help will require a police check but do not let this put you off. After-school clubs give pupils the opportunity to try a skill that they can then pursue in greater depth in their own time.

These opportunities allow teachers to see pupils in a different context too which can be useful. Further details will be issued to children from school.

Saturday 24th September not only saw brilliant sunshine but also the first Andover Community Gala to be organised on behalf of The School by The Parent Council in association with Brechin Cricket and Rugby Clubs.

The Andover Drummers launched proceedings, with visitors treated to a variety of stalls and activities manned by members of the Parent Council, Cricket Club, Rugby Club, teachers and pupils. Musical entertainment was provided by The City of Brechin Pipe Band and Brechin Brass Band.

In the arena, displays of rugby and cricket followed the pet-parade; with entrants judged by two of our local veterinary nurses. Specialist cookery, cake-decorating and puppet-making workshops were also on offer with Tayside Police, sponsored by the local Cooperative store, on-hand to provide security-coding for children’s cycles.

In bringing the afternoon’s events to a close, participants and sponsors were thanked for their contribution in making the afternoon such a huge success; adding to the ‘great sense of community’ commented on by so many.

Finally, balloons purchased during the day were released; hopefuls assured that it would be theirs travelling the greatest distance!

Proceeds will, in part, help towards the upkeep and continued use of the grounds by all.
